West Bromwich Leisure Centre.
The new multi-activity centre offers a 25 m pool, learner pool, sauna and steam room, a four-court sports hall, fitness suite, dance studios, a dedicated children’s adventure area and a cafe. One of the principal design drivers in developing the scheme was to create a dynamic and landmark building that responds to the needs of individuals and encourages participation by all sections of the community. The centre is BREEAM ‘excellent’ rated with a combined heat and power system and photo voltaic cells.
Close liaison with the client “places for people”, the architect and the main contractor took place from tender stage to completion to produce a quality leisure facility. Local involvement was stimulated by the support of Sandwell Council and the centre benefits students by providing training and employment opportunities, around 70% of works was sub-contracted locally. Students from Future Skills Sandwell buried a time capsule representing life in 2013 on the construction site. This student involvement is symbolic of the local involvement in the project in what has created a mixture of facilities, design and procedures that will mean the centre is sustainable for the future.”
